Testimony
Before I understood salvation I was fearful of the Judgment.
This is how I received Jesus as my personal Saviour.
My life is so different now.
Question:
If you were to die tonight (or if Jesus were to come today) and the next thing you
know you are facing God in the judgment, deep in your heart, what do you think
would happen to you? Have you come to the point in your experience where you
are certain of eternal life?
Good News:
Ephesians 2:8
Then someone explained Ephesians 2:8-10 to me:
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of
yourselves; it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good
works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in
them.”
Salvation is a gift Works are a fruit
Difference between a gift and a wage
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Since the Bible says we will be judged by our works, I once
thought my good deeds would be placed on one side of a scale
and all my bad deeds on the other. Only if the good deeds
outweighed the bad could I go to heaven. To make it worse I
realized that even one bad practice could send me to Hell. I was
never really sure of eternity because I was looking to my
behavior rather than to my Saviour for salvation.
2
A wage is something I earn. DEATH
A gift is something I receive. ETERNAL LIFE
Illustration: In order for a gift to belong to me, I must receive it.
Hold out a Bible. Say: “If I offered to give you this Bible, what would
you have to do in order to own it?” “Yes you would have to reach out
and receive it. It is the same with salvation.”
John 1:12
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to
become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.”
BUT HOW DO I RECEIVE JESUS?
MAN separation by GOD
sin
perfect sinner perfect God of Love
Draw a simple diagram. Point out that man is on one side and God is on the
other. Man and God are separated by sin. I realize the only perfect thing about
myself is that I am a perfect sinner. How can I ever get together with a perfect
God?
MAN good works GOD
fall short
Explain how good works fall short. The Bible says:
Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
No matter how many good works I perform. They will never recommend me to
God as worthy of salvation.
Difference between a gift and a wage
3
The only solution is in Christ Jesus. He bridged the gulf with His death on the
cross. He is a perfect Savior.
HOW DOES HIS DEATH MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
Genesis 18:25
“. . . Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
JUDGE ILLUSTRATION
Suppose a criminal should come
before the judge and the judge
would simply say. “I have great
love for this man, so I will forgive
him.” What would society think
of that judge?
SOLUTION
GOD, THE JUDGE, TAKES THE BLAME FOR SIN AGAINST HIMSELF
AND OTHERS. HE PAYS THE PRICE OF OUR FREEDOM.
ILLUSTRATION – HUSBAND AND WIFE
Suppose a husband says a harsh
word against his wife. She can
either retaliate or bear it. If she
decides to take it without
retaliation, she actually pays the
price for his sin against her.
The Bible says that Jesus bore
the hostility of sin against
Himself. (Hebrews 12:3 RSV)
GOD MAN
DEATH
Perfect Savior
4
John 20:28
“and Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.”
Isaiah 53:6
“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
ILLUSTRATION LAY SINS ON JESUS
Place your Bible on one hand and hold the other open. Then explain that the covered hand is like the sinner weighted down with condemnation from the law. Show the open hand and explain that this represents the pure spotless life of Jesus, which is without condemnation. Then place the Bible over on the hand representing Jesus. Explain that Jesus, BEING GOD, accepts the condemnation of your sin against Himself. It crushes out His sinless life. But he declares us pure and clean as though we had never sinned. Show the open hand.
QUESTION: DOES THIS MAKE SENSE?
The way we receive eternal life is to receive Jesus. To receive Jesus means to accept the gift of His perfect life in exchange for our sinful one.
Possible responses: “Yes”, or “It seems too good to be true”, or “Isn’t there more to it than simply believing?” or “But I have trouble believing.” Review, quote promises.
SEEMS SIMPLE BUT DON’T I HAVE TO REPENT AND REFORM MY LIFE BEFORE GOD WILL ACCEPT ME?
Romans 2:4 It is the goodness of God that leads us to repentance
Acts 5:38 Repentance is a gift also
John 6:37 “He that cometh to me, I will in no wise cast out.”
5
ILLUSTRATION HEART SURGERY
Suppose you have a diseased
heart and must have surgery.
You cannot reach in and take
out the old heart yourself.
Your part is to be willing to
let the surgeon do the work.
Ezekiel 11:19
“ . . . and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart
of flesh; That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do
them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.”
QUESTION: THAT MAKES IT CLEAR WHAT HE WILL DO IF WE ASK HIM
DOESN’T IT?
QUESTION: BUT DON’T I HAVE TO RESTORE THE WRONGS I HAVE DONE?
Luke 19:9 Zacchaeus Jesus says salvation “has come” when Zacchaeus was willing
to repay.
Explain, if necessary, that some things cannot be repaid.
THE QUESTION COMES: HOW DOES A PERSON DO THIS?
Romans 10:10,13
“For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness and with the mouth
confession is made unto salvation.”
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
DECISION:
It simply means that when we ask Him in prayer to save us from our sins
he does this.
As you think about it, there is really nothing standing in your way
from asking Him to be your Savior is there?
Would you like to do this? You can repeat a simple prayer after me if
you would like.
QUALIFICATION:
Explain the parable of the pearl of great price. (Matt. 13:45) We are
willing to give up everything; anything that would hurt others, God or
ourselves.
We gain everything: Jesus, eternal life, and abundant life here and now.
6
PRAYER:
Our Father in Heaven. I acknowledge that I am a sinner, and that I need a Savior. I lay my sins on Jesus. I am willing to yield my life to Him in faith. I ask for a new heart in order to keep your commandments. I believe your promise. I believe I have been cleansed, forgiven, and healed. Thank you for salvation.
AFFIRMATION
Ask if they now have assurance of eternal life.
If not, point out that it is not in feeling, but in believing
1 John 1:9
John 6:37
1 John 5:13
John 15:3
EXPLAIN
John 3:5 born of the water and of the Spirit
They are born of the Spirit by believing.
The Spirit abides in them and keeps them from sin. 1 John 3:9
Explain that this means the Spirit is the power that keeps us from practicing sin.
If we do sin we have an advocate. 1 John 2:1
